At the October 18, 2018 meeting, the Alabama Board of Physical Therapy discussed and voted to move forward in adopting the following language regarding the roles and responsibilities of the physical therapy aide. This language will replace the current language in the Administrative Code, Section 700-X-3-.03(c). Prior to moving through the formal adoption process, the Board is seeking public comment. Public comment is extremely important to assure that the language proposed is relevant, clear and concise, while also achieving the mission of public protection within the context of contemporary practice. Therefore you are invited to review this document and submit feedback through the survey link provided below.
The proposed language would replace the existing section regarding the physical therapy aide [Section 700-X-3-.03(c)] with the following language.
(c) Physical Therapy Aide. The roles and responsibilities of physical therapy aides in physical therapy care are:
(1) To perform patient related support duties (including but not limited to preparation of patient, support or stabilization during treatment, and applying or removing assistive/supportive devices) under the direct on-site supervision of the physical therapist or physical therapist assistant.
(i) The aide may only perform activities that do not require the clinical decision making of the physical therapist or physical therapist assistant.
(2) To perform without supervision non-patient related duties (including but not limited to housekeeping, clerical, reception, transporting, transfers and treatment area preparation)
